Feature news

For my feature news project, I decided to photograph someone close to me. This is Connor Pickett, a local reserve firefighter.

Fire truck parked in the bay area of a local fire station. Helps establish physical context.

Connor graduated from the fire academy and received his badge on June 6, 2016.

This photo helps establish social context. A norm with firefighters is being able to put your turnouts on in under 1 minutes. Connor's record is 28 seconds.

One struggle I had with this assignment was Connor's height. He's very tall, so getting different angles of him was difficult. I could have used a stepping stool, but I also like this picture and angle.

Hard news

Accident on Bluff Street.

Local firefighters access the damage of a car that ran a red light. When it comes to physical context, this accident happened on Bluff Street on the light by Subway.

A witness to the accident fills out a witness statement. The road sign "500 No." also helps establish physical context.

This photo helps establish social context because this is a norm firefighters often do after an accident. They will pour kitty litter onto any oil or fluids that leaked from the vehicle.

*This accident was a little difficult to shoot since it was in the middle of the road, and emergency personnel wouldn't let me get too close.

Photo Illustration

Oftentimes, when in a relationship, we don't always focus on our significant other when we should be. Instead, we're glued to social media, and we miss out on moments with our significant other. It's not unusual to see younger couples looking at their phones when they should be talking and looking at each other on a date. I am guilty of this too, sadly. That's what I was going for with these photos. I thought it was important to show disappointment or sadness from one person, so having Kyle pose with flowers and a sad expression was key to this photo, while Hanna was glued to her phone on Snapchat or other social media sites.

Shooting tight

Meet Luna Peaches, my cute little devil child. It's extremely difficult to photograph a hyper puppy who likes to attack anything in her face. I had to step back a lot in order to capture her cute personality. This assignment was fun.
